Shroud of Turin not a Forgery: Using Digital Imagery Science gives us a look at the face of Jesus

New research suggests Shroud of Turin dates to Jesus’ era

Tests conducted on the Shroud of Turin by researchers at Italy’s University of Padua indicate that the linen sheet believed by some to be Christ‘s burial cloth dates back to Jesus’ lifetime.

The 14-foot-long cloth bearing the image of a man with wounds similar to those suffered by Christ was analyzed by university scientists using infrared light, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The research linking the shroud to between 280 B.C. and A.D. 220 was published in book by Giulio Fanti, a professor at Padua University, and journalist Saverio Gaeta.

Fanti, a Catholic, told the Telegraph that the results were based on 15 years of research on fibers taken from the cloth, which were subjected to radiation intensity tests.

Fanti told the paper he rejects the conclusion of carbon dating tests conducted in 1988 that bolstered the theory the shroud was made in the 13th or 14th century in a medieval forgery.

Those results, Fanti said, were “false” because of laboratory contamination, the Telegraph reported.

The Vatican has never confirmed the authenticity of the shroud, but a Vatican researcher in 2009 said that faint writing on the cloth proves it was used to wrap Jesus’ body after his crucifixion.

The cloth is presently housed in Turin Cathedral in northwest Italy.

Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure village where He worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He never went to college. He never visited a big city. He never traveled more than two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He did none of those things one usually associated with greatness. He had no credentials but himself…

Sarah Palin Rocks at CPAC Conference

Sarah Palin was in the zone during her well-received remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday. In front of an electric crowd of conservative activists, the 2008 Republican candidate for Vice President slammed President Obama’s ideology and called for a united GOP front against the Democrat in the general election, argued that the drawn out primary is good for whoever becomes the nominee, and insisted on a return to traditional values.

“The president says small Americans, small-town Americans — we bitterly cling to our religion and our guns,” Palin said. “You say, I say, we say — keep your change. We’ll keep our God. We’ll keep our guns.”

Palin said that members of the Tea Party rose up over the last three years because “Americans woke up.”

Palin did not endorse a candidate Saturday to challenge Obama in the general election. The New York Times notes that the former Alaska governor has repeatedly praised the candidacy of Newt Gingrich, saying a month ago that she would vote for him if she lived in South Carolina. When asked if Gingrich should step aside to allow conservative to coalesce behind Rick Santorum, Palin told the Times, “Not yet.” She said that there was “room for more debate, for more discussion, adding: “I wouldn’t encourage anyone to drop out.”

Protesters disrupted Palin’s remarks, the first such disturbance during a speech at this year’s conference. ABC News reports that the response from Palin’s loyal supporters was fierce:

“As protesters chanted at her from the back of the room at the Marriott, a man in the back row leaped over his chair, ran toward them and screamed, ‘Get the hell out of here, you asshole!’

The protesters were kicked out as others in the room began chanting ‘USA! USA!‘ followed quickly by ’Sarah! Sarah!’

‘See, you just won,’ Palin ad-libbed to more cheers.”

Chris Field posted video of the protest and subsequent chants as seen from the crowd on The Blaze Blog earlier in the day. Occupy CPAC protesters have been outside the Marriott where the conference is being held since Wednesday, and have been coordinated by Washington D.C.’s AFL-CIO.

On January 20, 2012, the Obama administration announced that faith-based institutions must cover free contraception for employees. While mainstream media tries to pass this off as merely covering “the pill,” it also includes sterilization and abortifacients. (See the AP story here.) Regardless, Catholics (and other religious denominations) are being forced to accept insurance coverage for procedures and chemicals that are mortally dangerous, both physically and spiritually. What’s more, we’re being forced to pay for others to accept such coverage also, or go without health care coverage ourselves. Of course, the administration attempted to soften the blow by allowing faith-based entities until August 2013 to make the necessary changes to their insurance packages.

The Obama administration timed the announcement perfectly – right smack in the middle of the United States Bishops ad limina visits with the Holy Father during which the threat to our religious liberty is a primary concern, and just before the March for Life in Washington, DC.

On Thursday, January 19, Pope Benedict XVI remarked about this in his address to Region IV of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB):

“In the light of these considerations, it is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness presented by a radical secularism which finds increasing expression in the political and cultural spheres. The seriousness of these threats needs to be clearly appreciated at every level of ecclesial life. Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion. Many of you have pointed out that concerted efforts have been made to deny the right of conscientious objection on the part of Catholic individuals and institutions with regard to cooperation in intrinsically evil practices. Others have spoken to me of a worrying tendency to reduce religious freedom to mere freedom of worship without guarantees of respect for freedom of conscience.” 

The Holy Father cited this as a “grave threat” in which we’re being forced to cooperate in “intrinsically evil practices.”

WAKE UP AMERICA: A Painting is Worth a Thousand Words…..and more

Painting of Obama Trampling Constitution Resurfaces, Artist‘s New Work Tells ’Enslaved‘ Americans to ’Wake Up!’

Some may already be familiar with the image featured above. For those who aren’t, it is painting titled “The Forgotten Man” which features President Obama trampling on the Constitution while an astonished James Madison pleads with him to stop. To the side, a man sits on a park bench in the throes of depression while 43 presidents look on. The painting, which uses discarded dollar bills and scraps of paper with individual constitutional amendments scrawled onto them.

The Blaze first reported on artist Jon McNaughton’s controversial rendition back in 2010 when the artwork was released. Now, however, McNauughton’s Forgotten Man has resurfaced and is making its rounds across the internet again after appearing on Rachel Maddow’s blog on Thursday.

In a video that accompanied The Forgotten Man’s release, the politically charged McNaughton revealed, “For a long time I didn’t know if I wanted to paint this picture, because I worried it might be too controversial.”

He explained that the man on the park bench “represents every man, woman, and child who is an American“ and who ”hopes to find the American dream of happiness and prosperity.” The artist added, “But now because of unconstitutional acts imposed on the American people by our government we stand on the precipice of disasters.”

The artists’ work can be found at McNaughton Fine Art (though the site appeared to be down, at least temporarily on Friday evening) and on his Facebook Page. A search of McNaughton’s postings on Facebook reveal a number of paintings with strong political and religious themes including another provocative work released in October 2011 titled “Wake Up America.” The image features Obama smiling on the stump while shackled Americans gather around him.
